Schadenfreude Production’s Wardens is a play about three traffic wardens, a volunteer cop and a chemist trapped in an abandoned cricket club during a riot, probably written in conjunction with the 2011 riots. I found the performances reasonably engaging as the actors meandered about an intelligently sparse set, while the costumes served their purpose well. The plot trots along at an acceptable rate to an endearing and humanistic ending, although en route I found the fully grown adults doing gags about pooing in a pizza box a little sixth-form.
If I were to compare this play to anything it would possibly be John Godbor’s Bouncers, & if you fancy a slice of eighties confectionery-nostalgia and some soap-style satire this may be the play for you. THREE STARS.
